The creation of the Lafourche Parish Game and Fish Commission (Commission) and its jurisdiction over the Lake Field Game and Fish Preserve
(Preserve) were established through state statutes (LA R.S. 56:721-728, 801-802) and Lafourche Parish ordinances (Parish Ordinance Numbers
1382 and 1386). A later Parish Ordinance (Number 3141) added Lake Long under the management and jurisdiction of the Commission. The Commission
has not yet assumed jurisdiction over Lake Long because of unresolved legal issues.
Lake Long is located several miles south of Lake Fields on the east side of Company Canal. The Bing web site
map viewer displays the Lake Long area. The viewer can be zoomed and aerial, road, and birds-eye (highly
recommended for close ups) views are available.
The state lands surrounding Lake Long coincides with the high water mark or 1857 historic meander line of Lake Fields except for some areas that
have been sold or transferred by the State of Louisiana [FIGURE 1]. State lands may also be viewed online through the Louisiana Office of State Lands map viewer; this map viewer must be "zoomed in" and will display various aerial and topographic maps along with state lands boundaries of the
Preserve.
Status
Although the Louisiana Senate legal staff suggested that while it appears that the Commission could presently regulate Lake Long without
additional state legislation, the Commission approached Representative Jerry Gisclair to introduce legislation to validate the expansion
of the Commission's authority over Lake Long. House Bill 674 was introduced
in the 2010 Regular Session of the Lousisiana Legislature
by Representative Gisclair.
